Schengen 90/180 rule calculator

Travellers entering the Schengen Area without a long-stay visa may stay a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period. Days add up across all countries of the area: a week in France and another in Italy are fourteen days.

The rule is not a tax rule, but advisers watch it for two reasons: overstaying can lead to an entry ban, and days in Europe feed the tax residence counts of Spain, Portugal and other countries. Umbral includes it alongside the tax rules for that reason.

The calculator checks the 180-day window ending today and recent windows, to detect whether 90 days were already exceeded at some point.

Frequently asked questions

Does the rule apply to EU citizens?
No. Nor to holders of residence permits or national long-stay visas of a Schengen country, who are governed by their permit.
Does the count reset when I leave the Schengen Area?
No. The 180-day window is rolling: every day looks back 180 days and counts the days of presence. Leaving for a few days does not erase the previous ones.
Which countries form the Schengen Area?
Twenty-nine countries, including the EU members that apply it in full plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Ireland is not part of it.
