Portugal tax residence calculator
Portugal treats you as resident if you stay in its territory for more than 183 days, consecutive or not, in any twelve-month period that starts or ends in the year under review. It is a rolling window, like Colombia's, assessed for each year.
You are also resident, with fewer days, if you have a home in conditions that suggest the intention to keep it as your habitual residence. Anyone buying or renting long term in Lisbon or Porto should keep that in mind even if they travel a lot.
Portugal allows part-year residence: resident status can start and end within the same year, which affects which income is reported. This calculator is limited to counting days.

Frequently asked questions
- Does the twelve-month window have to start on 1 January?
- No. It can start on any day, as long as it starts or ends within the year under review. The calculator checks every recent window and shows the one with the most days.
- Does the day I land count?
- The calculator counts any day with a stay in Portugal, including arrival and departure days, which is the prudent criterion.
- What about the habitual home?
- Having a home with the intention of habitual residence can be enough to be resident below 183 days. It is a question of fact for an adviser to assess.
