Panama tax residence calculator
Panama treats as tax resident anyone who stays in the national territory for more than 183 days, consecutive or alternate, in the fiscal year or in the immediately preceding year. Anyone who has established a permanent home in the country also qualifies.
Panamanian tax residence matters most to those who want it: with a territorial system, many people seek the certificate of tax residence to prove it to other countries. To issue it, the tax authority requires documents beyond the days.
The calculator counts the days of the current year. Remember that the previous-year criterion can also establish residence.

Frequently asked questions
- Are 183 days enough to obtain the certificate of tax residence?
- No. Days are the substantive requirement, but the certificate requires proof of ties such as a home, economic activity or an immigration permit. Prepare it in advance.
- What does it mean that the immediately preceding year counts?
- That residence can rest on the days of the previous year. An adviser reviews both periods before concluding.
- Do transit days through Tocumen airport count?
- The calculator counts any day with declared presence. A transit without leaving the airport is normally not recorded as a stay; that is a call for the adviser to make with the evidence.
