Ecuador tax residence calculator

Ecuador applies two presence tests. The first is the classic one: 183 days or more, consecutive or not, within the same fiscal year, which matches the calendar year. The second is less known: 183 days or more within a twelve-month span covering two fiscal years, unless tax residence in another country is proven for that span.

The second test catches people who split a long stay between the end of one year and the start of the next. That is why Umbral offers both as separate jurisdictions: Ecuador by calendar year and Ecuador by twelve-month window.

The law also treats as resident anyone with the main centre of activities or economic interests in Ecuador, or with their closest family ties there, even below the day count.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the two Ecuadorian tests?
The first counts within the calendar year. The second counts within any twelve-month period touching two different years. Meeting either one makes you resident.
How is tax residence in another country proven?
With a certificate of tax residence issued by the other country's tax administration for the period in question. Without it, the second test applies without exception.
Does the calculator replace an accountant?
No. It counts days with the most prudent criterion and cites the rule, but the economic-interest and family-tie criteria require professional analysis.
